How do I neutralize strong amonia smell? movie reels and amonia smell?
I brought a bunch of vintage old movie reels. The problem with these reels is that the original owner at some point had put a paper towel soaked with amonia in the reels. The reels smell of amonia. I need to remove the smell. I’ve tried wiping the reels and containers with antibacterial soap and liquid dish washing soap. Neither worked. They don’t reek of amonia as much but they still smell of amonia. Please don’t suggest I use vinegar as I am sure the vinegar smell will do nothing but add to the smell. Also, if anybody has a reason why the original owner would put paper towers with amonia in the reel please let me know. I’m guessing it may be used to preserve the reels but I am not sure. Thank you.
I remember old 8mm film reels and canisters I had a long time ago in a galaxy far away….well not too far, but anyhow, I think if memory serves me, the ammonia odor is a byproduct of film deterioration. The previous owner may have put paper towel in the reels to try and absorb the ammonia created (some old film types also become extremely flammable in this state).
